Race report GO Virtual Brouwersdam by Youri Zoon

, by Youri Zoon, 2 min reading time

A virtual triathlon, but with a final ranking. Go Triathlon Brouwersdam did it.

May 29, 2021 should have been the weekend of Brouwersdam 90 Triathlon. Unfortunately, this event has also been moved to September 2021 due to Covid-19, but GO Triathlon had come up with a nice alternative, namely a Virtual Triathlon. On the weekend of May 29/30 you could do your own triathlon at your chosen location, but with a classification. Totally cool!

Brouwersdam was also the place where I did my first triathlon for fun and where it all started. So I didn't want to miss this.

Unfortunately, I went to Egypt for the weekend for a kitesurfing clinic. That's why I decided to do the triathlon on Wednesday when I returned. For me, the goal for this “training” triathlon was mainly to achieve a good cycling time. Like many others, I have not been able to practice swimming very much due to closed swimming pools this winter and luckily my running is quite steady.

Ready
The swimming itself was excellent with a time of 16min 17sec (1:37/100m). The goal for the cycling was to ride 40+. I had never achieved this before during a competition. No sooner said than done haha, I thought. This was tough, I must say, but in the end I had a great ride. And I even clocked an average of 40.6. There is still some room for improvement and we will certainly do so in the near future.

The walk started well, although it was already very warm. I ran away at 3:30/km, but I soon realized that it was too fast because of the heat. That's why I reduced the pace to 3:50/4:00. It went pretty well until the 6th kilometer , but then I unfortunately got some pain in my thigh. Nothing serious, but enough to drop the pace completely and simply finish the race at an endurance pace. 4:15 pace on the 10km is not good for me, but staying intact is more important. And it worked.

My goal was to cycle well and I am happy with that. In any case, it is very different racing without the real competition atmosphere and audience. In the end I finished with a time of 2:55:45, which was good for 3rd place overall. Now we know where we stand and what we need to work on. For now it's training, training, training and on to the next competition: the Olympic distance in Amersfoort.

Greetings,

Youri
