  • As an avid triathlete, I often receive curious comments on Instagram,"Why do you train indoors when it's dry outside?" and "How do you keep it up to train indoors?". For me, these questions are now familiar territory, but they provide an opportunity to share my passion for indoor training. The Benefits of Indoor Training. In this blog, I'd like to take you through my motivation behind training indoors and share some practical tips to maximize enjoyment and effectiveness.

The Motivation Behind Indoor Training

Although working out indoors is often associated with intense perspiration and feeling heavier than outdoors, for me the benefits are obvious and weigh heavily. Here are some reasons why I prefer to train indoors:

  • Always nutrition at hand: As a triathlete, I am often engaged in multiple training sessions per day. Getting enough nutrients in to successfully complete each workout is crucial. Training indoors offers the convenience of keeping my nutrition at my fingertips, without the inconvenient hassle of opening food during an outdoor run.
  • Efficiency: Combining a demanding job in finance with an intense training routine requires a tight schedule. Training indoors allows me to plan and execute my workouts more efficiently, without the distractions of traffic lights and traffic that come into play outside.
  • Focus: Training outdoors can sometimes be challenging, especially in crowded cities. It requires constant alertness, especially on a time trial bike. However, training indoors allows me to fully focus on executing my workout without being distracted by external stimuli.
  • Effectiveness: Indoor training provides a controlled environment in which I can accurately execute my workouts. No so-called "junk miles," but a focused and effective approach to my workouts, resulting in a more optimal training experience.

Practical Tips for Fun Indoor Training

  • Distractions: While many suggest enjoying entertainment while working out, I personally find satisfaction in listening to music and setting small goals. Focusing on my workout and achieving small milestones keeps me engaged and motivated.
  • Optimal equipment use: Invest in high-quality training equipment and ensure regular maintenance. A smooth-running trainer and a well-ventilated space contribute to a comfortable training experience.
  • Varied workouts: Vary your workout routine to avoid boredom and achieve different training goals. Incorporating a mix of interval workouts and endurance workouts keeps training challenging and interesting.
  • Focus on goals: During each workout, keep your bigger goals in mind. Think about what you want to achieve and let each workout contribute to this bigger picture. Visualize your success and stay focused even during the most challenging workouts.

Don't forget: hydration & nutrition

Don't underestimate the impact indoor training can have on your body. Ensuring adequate hydration and nutrient intake to maintain your energy levels is hugely important when training indoors. Working out indoors can lead to more sweating and fluid loss than outdoors, so make sure you get enough water and electrolytes to stay hydrated. I often mix up my water bottles with Isotonic Drink and Hydro Tabs so that I can continue to perform optimally.

It is also important to ensure a good intake of carbohydrates, protein and other nutrients to maintain your energy levels and promote muscle recovery. Choose easily digestible snacks and drinks that give you energy without stressing your stomach, so you can continue to train comfortably. Personally, I always ensure a fine balance between gelletjes and bars.

  • Important to remember - There is no right and wrong in the world of sports nutrition. Simply do what you feel good about and most importantly what you like!

Indoor training offers a valuable solution to effectively complete a busy workout schedule. With the right approach and mindset, indoor training can become not only more comfortable but also more enjoyable.
